Survey: Rampant Noncompliance with Corporate Policy
Bit9 recently conducted a survey about software usage policies. The purpose of the survey was to determine the level of control that IT departments have over their end users' use of desktop software, as well as the impact this has on IT operations. The survey revealed the following information about respondents:
- 38% said over half of their users have administrative access to their PCs
- 59% said either IT or IS is chiefly responsible for creating end-user desktop usage policies
- 66% said end-users' cooperation with these policies is either nonexistent, low, or medium
- 30% said over a quarter of their help desk's time is spent in calls related to unapproved end-user software

Schneier Discusses a New Type of Trojan
Bruce Schneier blogs about some researchers who passed out "promotional" CDs to people in London's financial district. People took these CDs back to their offices and ran them, stealthily notifying the researchers over the Internet. Though the software didn't actually do anything – this was just research – the experience underscores how rare it is for an average employee to even recognize potentially dangerous software. "It shouldn't have been possible for those users to run that CD," explains Schneier.
Bit9 gives you an easy way to prevent unauthorized software from running.
